HAUNTED REPUTATION

Called "the most paranormal city in America," Savannah is a mecca for those seeking a haunted experience. If you’re one of the many visitors interested in the haunted reputation of our city, we invite you to experience Savannah's haunted history from the Eliza Thompson House on historic Jones Street. Built in 1847, our house has just enough creaks and nuances to fit right in with the spirit of spooks in Savannah.

Originally built by Joseph and Eliza Thompson for their large family, the home’s history is closely tied to Savannah’s Civil War and Victorian-era past. Over the years, guests and local storytellers have described seeing the figure of a Confederate soldier standing quietly at an upstairs window, as well as hearing the soft laughter of a young girl in a white dress drifting through the hallway late at night. Whether explained or unexplained, these recurring accounts have helped secure the Eliza Thompson House’s place among Savannah’s most talked-about haunted stays.

Featured in The South Magazine's Savannah Paranormal Investigation:

A few years back, writers from The South Magazine stayed awake throughout the night to study the Eliza Thompson House's reported paranormal activity. The resulting article, titled “Fright Night,” was the subject of much conversation and speculation about the spirits that inhabit Savannah’s older homes. Using their own 'Fright-O-Meter' scale to compare the houses researched, the writers concluded that The Eliza Thompson House was a 4.5 out of 5.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We acknowledge Eliza Thompson House was built upon Muscogee Creek ancestral land. As settlers on their indigenous homeland, we have a duty to recognize the Muscogee Creek nation as the original stewards of Savannah and beyond. The Muscogee Nation is one of the 5 Civilized Tribes and is the fourth largest tribe in the US. Before 1500 AD, the Muscogee covered the entire southeastern US.

Here in downtown Savannah, the Yamacraw were a small group of Creek Indians living on the Savannah River. When Oglethorpe landed here in 1733, he worked with the Yamacraw (Chief Tomochichi) to peacefully settle on the bluff where Bay Street is today.

It is our hope that this land acknowledgment will help empower First Nation voices and inspire others in the community to pursue a stronger, more inclusive, and equitable future for our country. We seek to educate ourselves while contributing to the Muscogee Creek peoples by raising awareness and learning how to be a better ally against continued colonization.
